Diwali Performers

Last week we had some amazing performers come to Sunnyhills School and perform for us.

They danced, played cultural instruments and shared some of their traditions and culture with us.

This was an awesome way to celebrate in preparation for Diwali this week.

Yesterday we had some children come dressed up for Diwali. They looked wonderful!

Following up from the frozen hand experiment

As a little treat to follow up from the frozen hand experiment we looked at ice-blocks.
They started off as a liquid, we put them into the freezer and they turned into a solid.
When we added the heat from our hands and tongue, the solid started to melt and turned back into a liquid.

Another fun example of reversible change.

National Shake Out!

We had a National Shake Out Practice
We had to
STOP!
DROP!
COVER!
HOLD!

We did some Writing about it. Come into our class and read what we wrote. It will help to tell you what to do if we ever have a real earthquake.

Koru Whanau Poetry Festival

On Friday we had our first Koru Whanau Poetry Festival. The children from Room 9 and Room 9a did such an amazing job when saying their poems in the class. We were so proud of everyone! It was so hard to only pick three!

Room 9a finalists did a great job reciting their poem from memory!

James loved performing in front of an audience

Jayden enjoyed reciting his poem
Ellen did a fantastic job.

Room 9 finalists also recited their poems from memory!

Claire did a great job
Oscar was super confident
Josh thoroughly enjoyed reciting his poem
The children earned their certificates. They did an awesome job!

Well done to our finalists Jayden, Oscar, Ellen, Josh, James and Claire who did so well reciting their poem in front of so many people!

The AMAZING Sunnyhills Colour Run

Today was Sunnyhills first ever colour run! We all turned up in our nice, clean Colour Run t-shirts

Mr Burge, Mrs Burge, Emily and Lydia were all set!
Miss Bycroft and Mrs Burge were all ready for the bomb the teacher!

At the end, we all threw the powder up into the air!

Look at what happened to us all!!!!!

Thank you PTA members - That was a day to remember!!!!!

Scooter Training

Andy from Auckland Transport came to Sunnyhills School this week to teach us how to scooter safely.

There are 2 very important things we need to wear when we are riding a scooter. 1. A helmet (that fits) 2. Shoes You know your helmet is put on correctly when you remember the rule 2, 4, 1. 2 - you have to have only a 2 finger space between your eyebrows and the start of your helmet 4 - there should be 4 straps around your ears 1 - only 1 finger should fit between your chin and the strap of your helmet.

The Travelwise leaders came around and checked that our helmets were all on correctly.

We were put into groups to practice different scooter skills such as emergency stop, braking and what to do when going over a pedestrian crossing.

Here we are practicing our scooter skills!

We all had such a great time at scooter training!

Science

Today to spark our new Science Inquiry, we had a science rotation. We moved round from Room 9a to Room 8, Room 12, Room 13, Room 10 and Room 9. In each room, we did a different experiment. In Room 9a, we wrote secret, invisible messages using lemon juice and when it dried, they were ironed to reveal the secret message.
In Room 8, we did the coke and mentos experiment.
In Room 12, we made ooblick.
In Room 13, we made a volcano eruption.
In Room 10, we made sugar dissolve.
And in Room 9, we did a colour changing milk experiment.

What a fantastic way to start our new Inquiry.......what will we do next I wonder???

Room 9a ASB GetWise programme

Marlon taught us so much about coins and notes. We learned a song about how we need to save some, spend some and share some money.

Marlon was funny - he made us laugh while we were learning.

We sorted coins and notes.

Elizabeth helped us to learn about saving, sharing and spending our money.
