Following up from the frozen hand experiment

As a little treat to follow up from the frozen hand experiment we looked at ice-blocks.
They started off as a liquid, we put them into the freezer and they turned into a solid.
When we added the heat from our hands and tongue, the solid started to melt and turned back into a liquid.

Another fun example of reversible change.

The Milk Experiment

We did the milk experiment as an ignition for Writing

We started off by putting milk on a plate. Then we added drops of food colouring.

Miss Bycroft put some washing up liquid onto a cotton bud and dipped it into the milk. The milk looked like it was running away from the cotton bud!

 It was very colourful.
The science behind this experiment is...
The dish soap does not mix with the milk. Instead it floats on top and spreads over the surface. As it spreads, it grabs the food colouring. Soap is a "degreaser" so the molecules in it are attacking the fat in the milk, causing motion which creates the swirling of the colours.

Science

Today to spark our new Science Inquiry, we had a science rotation. We moved round from Room 9a to Room 8, Room 12, Room 13, Room 10 and Room 9. In each room, we did a different experiment. In Room 9a, we wrote secret, invisible messages using lemon juice and when it dried, they were ironed to reveal the secret message.
In Room 8, we did the coke and mentos experiment.
In Room 12, we made ooblick.
In Room 13, we made a volcano eruption.
In Room 10, we made sugar dissolve.
And in Room 9, we did a colour changing milk experiment.

What a fantastic way to start our new Inquiry.......what will we do next I wonder???

Room 9a visited the Life Education Van

On Monday Room 9a visited the Life Education Van.
We were learning all about how to be kind, how to be a good friend and how to look after our friends.

The caravan is a mobile classroom.

Harold came to talk to us about being a good friend.

We did a jigsaw puzzle about how to be a good friend.

We had lots of fun.

We can't wait to go again on Wednesday. We hope we will see Harold again.

ANZAC Assembly

We have been learning about ANZAC Day and what ANZAC stands for:
Australian and New Zealand Army Corps

We have been thinking about how the soldiers were Heroes and how they fought to make New Zealand safe for us to live in today. We all wore a poppy for the Whole school Assembly.

Even Miss Bycroft and Mrs Burge wore a poppy.

We all sat very quietly while the Last Post was played.

St John Ambulance Writing

After St John Ambulance Service came to speak to us, we drew some pictures about the things we found out.
We used vivid to draw our pictures straight onto the paper - how impressive are these pictures????
